Amsterdam UMC Center for Diabetic Foot Complications

Amsterdam UMC Center for Diabetic Foot Complications (ACDC) consists of an alliance of clinicians and researchers dedicated to improving diabetic foot care and preventing amputations in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and worldwide.

There are approximately one million persons with diabetes mellitus in the Netherlands. One of the most feared complications of diabetes is a non-healing wound leading to infection and amputation. Reasons for this could be decreased blood flow to the foot, reduced sensation because of nerve damage, and increased pressure on the bottom of the foot. However, most amputations due to diabetes are preventable. To prevent amputations, more research is needed.

The research staff of ACDC have been among the founding fathers of the Dutch Study Group for Neurovascular Complications of Diabetes (NVCD), a research network in the Netherlands. The staff is also involved in the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot, an international organization that publishes evidence based guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of foot problems.

At ACDC, we are dedicated to improve clinical care of the diabetic foot by advancing research in our center.
